MIDS Link 16 Online Course Open for Registration

 


Link 16 is the standard by which other systems are measured when transmitting and receiving real-time tactical data using links between network participants.  In fact, Link 16 has been credited as the key factor for saving lives in multiple theatres of operations due to the secure, increased situational awareness the system provides.  Training is now more relevant than ever to ensure you keep abreast of technological enhancements in Tactical Data Links.  In terms of maintaining and maximising awareness during software and hardware updates, it is crucial that personnel have a strong knowledge of Link 16 at both an operational and technical level.

If you are currently involved in the implementation, upgrade, management or extension of Link 16, our Introduction to Multifunctional Information Distribution System (MIDS) Link 16 online training will assist you within your role.  The course will run between 5th and 8th July 2021 and covers both technical and operational employment of MIDS Link 16 and aims to give a balanced understanding of technical and operational characteristics.

Online Multifunctional Information Distribution Systems (MIDS) Link 16 Training




Registrations are now being accepted for the forthcoming MIDS Link 16 Training course which is due to take place online between 22 - 26 June 2020.  The aim of the course is to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of MIDS Link 16 and covers both technical and operational employment of the system.

By the end of the course, students will be able to explain, describe, identify, interpret and recall a range of MIDS Link 16 related protocols and data including MIDS terminal characteristics, J-Series message catalogue, Frequency Clearance Agreements and the use of the Operational Tasking (OPTASK) Link.  The course will also explore the planned changes to the terminals used by Link 16 in accordance with Block Upgrade 2.

The course is spread over 5 days, in sessions of approximately 3.5 to 4 hours in duration to ensure an engaging learning experience and is aligned with what students receive when attending our MIDS Link 16 classroom course.

Training delegates receive unlimited access to the SyntheSys Defence Community Portal along with electronic copies of the course material, and the MIDS Link 16 manual via the portal.

Summer 2019 UK Tactical Data Link Training Date Confirmed - Gain a Deep Understanding of Both MIDS Link 16 and JREAP


By popular demand, SyntheSys is extending the 2019 Tactical Data Link (TDL) Training programme to include a Multifunctional Information Distribution System (MIDS) Link 16 and Joint Range Extension Application Protocol (JREAP) training course.

The three-and-a-half-day course will be taking place in Lincoln, United Kingdom 16th - 19th July 2019 with two-and-a-half-days focus on MIDS Link 16 being immediately followed by a single day’s JREAP training.  The course is modular in approach and as such, delegates are invited to join the combined course, or tailor attendance based on training requirements.

The Link 16 element is primarily aimed at those personnel who require a balanced understanding of MIDS Link 16.  Consequently, the syllabus has been designed to cover both technical and operational employment of MIDS Link 16.  Students can expect to examine and study elements such as MIDS Architecture, Interoperability, Terminals & Block Upgrade 2, MIDS Initialisation / Synchronisation as well as Surveillance and Weapons Operations.

The JREAP element of the training explains the benefits of the JREAP protocol and also provides technical detail of how the system works.  The day starts with a basic introduction to JREAP and builds on this knowledge by examining Full Stack and Application Layer, JREAP messages and an overview of relevant standards.  The latter part of the course is practical in nature and utilises the Operational Tasking (OPTASK) Link JRE Segment 11.1; we will spend time operating the SAIC JRE Software.

The course has been designed to encompass both the NATO Allied Tactical Data Link Publications (ATDLPs) and the United States (US) Military Standards (MIL-STDs) documentation.  Furthermore, the course has utilised operator procedures detailed within both NATO ATDLP-7.33 and US Joint Multi-TADIL Operating Procedures (JMTOP) (Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Manual CJCSM 6120.01).

  • Anyone with a need to expand their MIDS Link 16 and JREAP knowledge in theoretical and practical areas of technical specifications, planning, operations, troubleshooting and analysis.  The course may be especially beneficial for the following personnel:
  • Operators employed in Data Link Management Centres (Planners, Network Designers, Network Managers etc.) - gain a better understanding of TDL concepts
  • Operators utilising TDLs in operations or exercises (Airborne, Naval or Ground-based) - enhance your knowledge to improve your operational awareness
  • Managers responsible for the direction of TDL operations - improve your comprehension of the architectures under your command
  • Individuals responsible for the procurement of TDL systems - increase your understanding of the operator’s requirements
  • Members of industry who build and design TDL systems - better understand the needs of your customers

SyntheSys Completes Combined MIDS Link 16 and Identification Friend or Foe Training Course

SyntheSys has just completed its first combined Multifunctional Information Distribution System (MIDS) Link 16 and Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) training to students from both the military and industry.  The course took place at the Institute of Directors in London, UK, where three days were spent on Link 16 training and one day on IFF.

SyntheSys Training Manager Paul ‘Ski’ Czajkowski, who led the course, said the subject area covered the basics through to Advanced Link 16, looking at both technical and operational use.  Ski said: “This training was important as the course attendees are specifically focused on MIDS Link 16 integration within their own national systems.  Consequently, there is a need to not only understand both the protocols and procedures as described in the various TDL Standards, but also how those are put into practice during actual operational use.  The students were fully engaged in the material which is very rewarding as an instructor.  All provided very positive feedback”.

The students’ interest around Link 16 protocols and best practices meant that the Link 16 simulator proved to be particularly useful.  This simulation is a unique feature of SyntheSys courses, and aids each student in exploring what MIDS Link 16 provides, both on the operational and technical front.
The IFF training day included the civilian Mode S technology and the military Mode 5.  The students were particularly interested in how both Modes S & 5 data is exchanged via Link 16, right down to bit level, and the transmission rules.

Due to high demand we have been requested to provide further MIDS/Link 16 and Link 22 training courses in January 2016, at Branston Hall Hotel, near Lincoln, UK.

Personnel from Royal Air Force Brize Norton undertake SyntheSys JTIDS/MIDS Link 16 Training

As part of our on-going commitment in support of the A400M Atlas programme at RAF Brize Norton, we are pleased to announce that we have just delivered two days of JTIDS/MIDS Link 16 training.

The training was provided to military and civilian personnel involved in the support of the first MIDS equipped A400M Atlas.  Personnel were instructed on the basic components of JTIDS/MIDS before progressing to more complex areas such as crypto loading, initialisation and joining a network.  The training placed particular emphasis on the operational use of JTIDS/MIDS and how it can be employed to increase operational effectiveness.  This culminated in the use of the Data Link Training Suite which allowed personnel to explore exactly how they will benefit from utilising JTIDS/MIDS in the future.

SyntheSys delivers Link 16 TDL Interoperability testing to the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration

SyntheSys is pleased to announce their support to the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) in the successful completion of a Link 16 TDL Interoperability (IO) test between the Swedish ASC890 and the UK E-3D Sentry platforms.  This was the first time the UK and Sweden have tested Link 16 capable platforms over secure networks from National land based test facilities.  The test was ably supported by the E-3D Software Support Team (SST) in the UK, as well as by the FMV and Saab in Sweden.

The test was interfaced at the E-3D Mission Equipment Facility (MEF), Royal Air Force (RAF) Waddington through the UK Multi-Link Test Facility (MLTF) which is operated by SyntheSys.  SyntheSys provided a range of services for the test from its Validation Evaluation and Compliance Testing of Requirements (VECTOR) services.  These included:
  • Planning and support between the two platform authorities.
  • Development of the test plan and procedures.
  • Provision of test support at RAF Waddington.
  • Performing the duties of Director for the Test. 
The test cases for the IO test that were executed covered Own Unit Reporting, Air Surveillance, and Command and Control.

The primary objective of the IO test was to ensure the ASC890 demonstrated evidence to support its initial active participation in a forthcoming International IO Test in October 2014.  Generally, new participants have to join this international test passively (monitoring information only), then semi-active participation (transmission of PPLI only) before full active participation can be granted by the international community.  However, from the evidence of this test, it is expected that that the ASC890 will be granted permission to join immediately in the international test as an active participant.  Therefore, the ASC890 can immediately realise the benefits of testing IO with other nations, saving our customer, the FMV, both time and money in achieving its IO goals

Correlation/Decorrelation Interoperability Test 14-1



SyntheSys provided independent expertise to the UK MoD in relation to the supply of equipment and services to support the testing of correlation/decorrelation tracking algorithms on MIDS Link 16.

Our role encompasses the provision of the Multi-Link Test Facility (MLTF), E-3D host analysis and UK Stakeholder management to enable the testing of correlation/decorrelation tracking algorithms on MIDS Link 16 through interoperability testing (CDIT).

On completion of the Runs for record the US Test Director shared the following accolade “The rapid and facile integration of CDIT Coalition 14-1 and the smooth execution of the test plan has been possible only due to the cooperation and diligence of participating team members on both sides. The permissions process, the hardware and software configuration and integration as well as the network connectivity and test planning show that we have a functioning process to work through this testing. Our sincere thanks and appreciation go out to our team members.

SyntheSys has provided support to the CDIT for the past 5 years and continues to do so under contract to the DE&S Situational Awareness Command and Control (SACC) Delivery Team (DT).

SyntheSys provides Link 16 Training Course to the E-3D Software Support Team

SyntheSys has recently completed delivery of a 2 and a half day Introduction to JTIDS/MIDS Link 16 Training Course to members of the E-3D Software Support Team (SST) at RAF Waddington, Lincoln, England. The course was provided to allow the members of the SST a better understanding of the fundamental operating protocols for JTIDS/MIDS Link 16. SyntheSys delivers Link 16 Network Design Training to Cassidian

SyntheSys are pleased to announce the delivery of a Link 16 Network Design Course at Eurofighter System Support Centre in Manching, Germany. Personnel from both Cassidian and the German Air Force were provided with an in depth understanding of Link 16 Network Design and the importance of correctly assessing a platforms requirements.  Specifically focused on the Typhoon Eurofighter, personnel were instructed on the calculus involved to create the most efficient Network Designs based upon both extensive research and analysis of the platform and assessment of Link 16 documentation. SyntheSys provide Test Support to Sweden ASC890 Program

SyntheSys is providing test support to Sweden’s ASC890 programme.  We are tasked with development and execution of a Link 16 TDL Interoperability Test event between the Swedish ASC890 and UK E-3D Sentry platforms, over NATO and UK secure networks, interfacing at the E-3D Mission Equipment Facility (MEF), Royal Air Force (RAF) Waddington through the UK Multi-Link Test Facility (MLTF) operated by SyntheSys.



The test is planned to take place in February 2014 and SyntheSys are not only developing the test plan and test procedures, but also providing the test direction on site at the Swedish ASC890 facility in Malmslätt.

SyntheSys delivers Data Link Management (DLM) training at Italian Air Base Poggio Renatico

Personnel from both the Italian DLMC and Polish Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) were instructed on Link 1, Link 11A&B, Link 16, 22, Variable Message Format and JREAP. Utilising the Data Link Training Suite, TACTx and JRE software the students were able to effectively plan, design and manage Multi TDL architectures in a synthetic environment truly enhancing an operators understanding of the subjects taught, and further demonstrating SyntheSys commitment to ‘hands on training’. Mr Szymon Tarnoruda, Polish AFIT said, “The course was very well presented and provided a great deal of essential information and practical skills on a wide range of TDLs. One of the most important features was the excellent use of real systems and simulation”.

Swedish Armed Forces Technical School Purchase the Data Link Training Suite

The Swedish Armed Forces Technical School, based in Halmstad has recently completed the purchase of the MIDS Link 16 Data Link Training Suite (DLTS). The DLTS will be used to train their personnel on the technical and operating procedures utilised for MIDS/Link 16.

Interface Control Officer/Network Manager Training at Poggio Renatico



At the request of the Italian Data Link Management Cell, SyntheSys is pleased to announce that we will deliver a 10 day Multi TDL Interface Control Officer/Network Manager training course, starting on 30 September and running until 11 October 13. The course will cover all phases of Multi TDL management from planning, through to execution and subsequent analysis.  Practical exercises, and utilisation of simulation will be included throughout to enhance the students learning experience.   A limited number of spare places are available. SyntheSys’ Theatre Missile Defence Experimentation Success


Test Directors and managers on both sides of the Atlantic have heaped praise on SyntheSys’ experts’ contributions to joint Maritime Theatre Missile Defence experimentation.  The US Test Director commented that the SyntheSys contribution was “amazing” and that it was a “pleasure” working with such a professional team, whilst the UK MOD project manager described the contribution as “outstanding”.  These comments followed the latest in a continuing series of experiments to test the Royal Navy and coalition forces abilities to defend surface targets in a virtual Maritime Theatre Missile Defence scenario utilising the US-led Coalition Distributed Engineering Plant.

SyntheSys contributes Multi-Link Test Facility services that provide secure communications between the UK Type 45 destroyer test facility, located at the Maritime Integration Support Centre in Portsmouth, and other coalition naval test facilities in Europe, North America and Australia.  The Multi-Link Test Facility equipment provides sensor feeds to excite the various Type 45 radars and emulates the Link 16 and Link 11 Tactical Data Link networks to share surveillance, command and control, and other information between network participants.  This is a safe virtual environment in which to test equipment, refine tactical procedures, and train operators for engaging ballistic and conventional missiles in preparation for live firing trials planned for 2015.

As well as providing the Multi-Link Test Facility equipment and assisting in the conduct of the tests, SyntheSys supports the tests by coordinating UK government and industry stakeholders to develop test objectives, reviewing and determining scenario changes, and undertaking performance analysis for future tests and exercises.

John Miller, SyntheSys’ Technical Director, commented that “This is a great example of the way in which the Multi-Link Test Facility is providing a very low cost and a very effective way of testing tactical communications systems - analysis shows that it is in excess of 70 times cheaper and has greatly increased control and repeatability when compared with equivalent live tests.”
