Multi National Personnel Complete SyntheSys Data Link Manager (DLM)/Interface Control Officer (ICO) Training Course

We are pleased to announce that personnel from the Norwegian TDL Squadron, Swedish and Finnish JDLOC and Royal Netherlands Air Force have successfully completed our three week DLM/ICO Training Course.

The course was hosted by the Norwegian TDL Squadron at Jørstadmoen camp in the picturesque area of Lillehammer.  Attendees were provided with in depth instruction on Link 1, 11, 16, 22, Variable Message Format and Joint Range Extension Application Protocols.  Using their acquired knowledge and working in small groups, they then continued with a series of challenging Multi TDL Planning exercises, where they had to define progressively more complex TDL architectures and subsequently coordinate the correct allocation of TDL parameters.  Multi National operations and exercises are increasingly demanding more from DLM/ICO and Data Link Management Cell personnel.  Accordingly, our practical modules are designed to thoroughly test, educate and ultimately develop these personnel for the challenges that lie ahead.

Students then briefed their plan before testing and ultimately validating their architecture through the use of simulation and real world operational software.  This interactive learning environment enabled all students to fully visualise their operational plan, identifying elements such as the potential for data looping or the misallocation of critical TDL duties and their impact.  This allowed each individual to manage their architecture as a DLM/ICO would, helping to build confidence, and to apply their newly gained skills and theory in an enjoyable and cooperative learning atmosphere.

SyntheSys announce that HP Enterprise Services Defence & Security is the latest organisation to invest in the company’s Tactical Data Link (TDL) Network Design Station (TNDS) training capability. Held in the UK, SyntheSys welcomes attendees from the UK Joint Data Link Management Organisation, Danish Data Link Management Cell (DLMC), Finnish DLMC and Italian DLMC

SyntheSys’ TNDS training is the only training solution combining technical expertise with computer-based training, which not only examines the capabilities of TNDS but empowers attendees to identify the correct calculus in which to construct Multifunctional Information Distribution System (MIDS) Link 16 networks and how to employ the full features of TNDS to ensure operational effectiveness for both the user and TDL community.

The TNDS is a fully integrated, WindowsTM-based facility for the planning, design, distribution and configuration management of TDL Network Designs. It supports both the generation of initialisation data for JTIDS/MIDS assets and the exchange of International Network Designs. It is designed to operate in a Windows 7, WindowsTM XP environment on COTS PCs.

SyntheSys delivers Data Link Management (DLM) training at Italian Air Base Poggio Renatico

Personnel from both the Italian DLMC and Polish Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) were instructed on Link 1, Link 11A&B, Link 16, 22, Variable Message Format and JREAP. Utilising the Data Link Training Suite, TACTx and JRE software the students were able to effectively plan, design and manage Multi TDL architectures in a synthetic environment truly enhancing an operators understanding of the subjects taught, and further demonstrating SyntheSys commitment to ‘hands on training’. Mr Szymon Tarnoruda, Polish AFIT said, “The course was very well presented and provided a great deal of essential information and practical skills on a wide range of TDLs. One of the most important features was the excellent use of real systems and simulation”.

Interface Control Officer/Network Manager Training at Poggio Renatico

At the request of the Italian Data Link Management Cell, SyntheSys is pleased to announce that we will deliver a 10 day Multi TDL Interface Control Officer/Network Manager training course, starting on 30 September and running until 11 October 13. The course will cover all phases of Multi TDL management from planning, through to execution and subsequent analysis.  Practical exercises, and utilisation of simulation will be included throughout to enhance the students learning experience.   A limited number of spare places are available. SyntheSys’ Theatre Missile Defence Experimentation Success

Test Directors and managers on both sides of the Atlantic have heaped praise on SyntheSys’ experts’ contributions to joint Maritime Theatre Missile Defence experimentation.  The US Test Director commented that the SyntheSys contribution was “amazing” and that it was a “pleasure” working with such a professional team, whilst the UK MOD project manager described the contribution as “outstanding”.  These comments followed the latest in a continuing series of experiments to test the Royal Navy and coalition forces abilities to defend surface targets in a virtual Maritime Theatre Missile Defence scenario utilising the US-led Coalition Distributed Engineering Plant.

SyntheSys contributes Multi-Link Test Facility services that provide secure communications between the UK Type 45 destroyer test facility, located at the Maritime Integration Support Centre in Portsmouth, and other coalition naval test facilities in Europe, North America and Australia.  The Multi-Link Test Facility equipment provides sensor feeds to excite the various Type 45 radars and emulates the Link 16 and Link 11 Tactical Data Link networks to share surveillance, command and control, and other information between network participants.  This is a safe virtual environment in which to test equipment, refine tactical procedures, and train operators for engaging ballistic and conventional missiles in preparation for live firing trials planned for 2015.

As well as providing the Multi-Link Test Facility equipment and assisting in the conduct of the tests, SyntheSys supports the tests by coordinating UK government and industry stakeholders to develop test objectives, reviewing and determining scenario changes, and undertaking performance analysis for future tests and exercises.

John Miller, SyntheSys’ Technical Director, commented that “This is a great example of the way in which the Multi-Link Test Facility is providing a very low cost and a very effective way of testing tactical communications systems - analysis shows that it is in excess of 70 times cheaper and has greatly increased control and repeatability when compared with equivalent live tests.”
