SyntheSys Completes Combined MIDS Link 16 and Identification Friend or Foe Training Course

SyntheSys has just completed its first combined Multifunctional Information Distribution System (MIDS) Link 16 and Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) training to students from both the military and industry.  The course took place at the Institute of Directors in London, UK, where three days were spent on Link 16 training and one day on IFF.

SyntheSys Training Manager Paul ‘Ski’ Czajkowski, who led the course, said the subject area covered the basics through to Advanced Link 16, looking at both technical and operational use.  Ski said: “This training was important as the course attendees are specifically focused on MIDS Link 16 integration within their own national systems.  Consequently, there is a need to not only understand both the protocols and procedures as described in the various TDL Standards, but also how those are put into practice during actual operational use.  The students were fully engaged in the material which is very rewarding as an instructor.  All provided very positive feedback”.

The students’ interest around Link 16 protocols and best practices meant that the Link 16 simulator proved to be particularly useful.  This simulation is a unique feature of SyntheSys courses, and aids each student in exploring what MIDS Link 16 provides, both on the operational and technical front.

The IFF training day included the civilian Mode S technology and the military Mode 5.  The students were particularly interested in how both Modes S & 5 data is exchanged via Link 16, right down to bit level, and the transmission rules.

SyntheSys provides TDL Training to Joint Sensors and Engagement Networks Delivery Team

Ten personnel from the Joint Sensors and Engagement Networks Delivery Team (JSENS DT) attended a one day TDL training event held at the MOD Defence Equipment & Support facility at Abbey Wood Bristol.  Topics covered included overviews of current TDLs, Testing, and the functions and responsibilities of the UK JDLMO.  Based on the feedback received, those attending were very happy with the information provided. SyntheSys would like to thank the JSENS DT for their kind hospitality, and looks forward to working together again in the near future.

NATO Personnel Successfully Complete Data Link Manager (DLM) /Interface Control Officer (ICO) Training Course

SyntheSys is delighted to announce that personnel from the Italian Data Link Management Cell (DLMC), NATO Deployable Air Command and Control Centre (DACCC), Poggio Renatico (ITALY), Norwegian Logistics Organisation and Netherlands National DLMC have successfully completed our three week Data Link Manager/Interface Control Officer (DLM/ICO) Training Course.

Students firstly undertook theory lessons combined with the use of simulation and real world operational software, focusing on Link 1, 11, 16, 22, VMF and JREAP.  They then progressed to several challenging planning exercises based upon large scale multinational operations where the students had to identify, and subsequently utilise, a variety of Multi Tactical Data Link (TDL) Information Exchange Requirements (IERs).

Using the specific Joint Tactical Information Distribution System/Multifunctional Information Distribution System Information Exchange Requirements (JTIDS/MIDS IERs) a Link 16 Network Design Document (NDD) set was prepared for the students.  Through a guided session they were shown how to interpret and fully understand all parts of an NDD with emphasis on the Connectivity Matrix.

Finally, using their planning scenarios, operational signals and the combination of simulation, they created numerous Multi TDL architectures to confirm that their plan would work correctly.  This check of understanding using simulation provided an ideal environment for all students to achieve their individual learning outcomes.

Finnish JDLOC Undertake SyntheSys Link 16 Network Design Training Course

Personnel from the Finnish Joint Data Link Operations Centre have just completed an 8 day intensive Link 16 Network Design training course.  The course was held in the beautiful city of Jyväskylä in central Finland.

The course focused on the knowledge and tools required to equip students in correctly identifying specific information exchange requirements, how to coordinate more closely with other JTIDS/MIDS nations and organisations, and how efficient use of network capacity using Network Participation Groups (NPG) should be performed.

During the training course the students were continuously challenged through progressive practical exercises in which they had to create a variety of intricate networks.  This expanded their understanding of Link 16 Network Design allowing them to explore all functionalities, and more significantly, platform idiosyncrasies.  Personnel utilised the TDL Network Design Station (TNDS) throughout the course and the tool supported the students in achieving all of their learning outcomes.

SyntheSys Continues to Deliver TDL Network Design Station (TNDS) Training

Our latest collaboration with HP Enterprise Services Defence & Security UK Ltd has seen the Austrian Air Force partake in TNDS training in the scenic town of St Johann im Pongau near the Austrian Alps. The main focus of the 4 day course was to ensure that students understood the functionality and performance of the Link 16 Network Design Tool. 

Students were instructed in the use of several other applications that support the user in the planning of Link 16 architecture and identifying and correcting issues with imported network designs. In addition, personnel were taught how to correctly assess user requirements to identify the most efficient use of network capacity.

SyntheSys Attend JRE Operators Working Group

By invitation of the Engility Corporation, the manufacturers of Joint Range Extension (JRE), Tony Castle, SyntheSys Training Manager, will be attending the JRE Operators Working Group (JRE OWG) which will take place in Mission Valley, San Diego, USA, between 29 April and 1 May 14.  

The conference will focus on the following areas:

• Exploration of  JRE Integration Strategies including insight into JRE Software changes as well as future enhancements.
• Hands-on experience with JRE Version 5.3.
• JRE-Enabled Tablet and TacView (JET) developments.
• Opportunity to provide feedback and learn about prioritisation of track messages, Intercept Vector/Closest Point of Approach display, JREAP-C Multi-Cast, 3D Graphic, VMF and more...
•  Navigation of the JRE Situational Awareness Display and JRE Micro-Light, and other GUI enhancement
• The use of  simulation for Data Link training using the JRE simulation software (JDOTS) plug-in.
• Assessment of Challenges and Solutions in peer-to-peer Discussions including:
• Engagement in round-table discussions with operational users and solution providers. 
• Sharing of best practices and lessons learned from the field

Attendance at this conference will allow our staff to increase their existing knowledge of JRE and its operational use. This augmented knowledge can then be used to further enhance the service we provide to our JRE and JREAP customers.

Headquarters Allied Air Command Procure SyntheSys Training Services

Headquarters Allied Air Command (HQ AIRCOM) have recently contracted SyntheSys to provide a 15 day Multi TDL Data Link Manager (DLM)/Interface Control Officer (ICO) training course. The course will be held at CAOC Uedem, Germany in June 2014. Participating students will be drawn from HQ AIRCOM, CAOCs Uedem and Torrejon, NATO DARS  Deployable Air Command and Control Capability (DACCC) and national units. The students will come from 6 different nations - Italy, Norway, USA, Turkey, The Netherlands and Denmark. The training, which is based on proven NATO procedures, will encompass the disciplines necessary to ensure the smooth and efficient running of the multi TDL environment.  Theoretical lessons will be reinforced with exercises, and the use of simulation, to bring the learning to life.
