SyntheSys’ SPIRIT tool set supports Sweden’s Försvarets Materielverk (FMV)

We are pleased to announce that Sweden’s Försvarets Materielverk (FMV) has selected our SPIRIT interoperability management process and tool set to support the integration and testing of a new Data Link Processor(DLP) and maintenance of existing Link 16 capability for the Swedish Air Force’s ASC-890 airborne early warning aircraft.

The ASC-890 (Airborne Surveillance and Control) is based on the Saab 340 airframe and Saab’s Erieye airborne early warning and control system.  The DLP will help to sustain the platform’s Link 16 Tactical Data Link (TDL) operations.

The SPIRIT process and tool set supports comprehensive systems engineering-based testing, as well as compatibility with the iSMART TDL requirements management method.  SPIRIT verifies the requirements through Unified Modelling Language (UML) models of the governing standards, ensuring a complete, consistent, and correct baseline against which testing can be carried out.  The same models are used to define the minimum set of test cases necessary for comprehensive validation of the platform’s implementation against the standards and original requirements.  The tool set, based on the IBM Rational range of software, provides full traceability of requirements from the governing standards, through the iSMART documentation set, to test cases, test scripts and  test results.

New Tasking: UK MOD tasks SyntheSys to provide TDL test and acceptance expertise

SyntheSys today announces acceptance of a 14 month contract to support the Project Team (PT) for the A400M military transport aircraft to progress the MIDS/Link 16 integrated test evaluation and acceptance plan (ITEAP).  The project also includes ongoing MIDS integration support to the A400M MIDS/Link 16 programme.


This kind of testing is no mean feat; TDL testing is a through-life activity from checking the theoretical implementation, through standards conformance testing, to live trials.  It is conducted through both paper-based scrutiny and rig-based testing.  SyntheSys’ proven experience of developing test strategies, preparing test scripts, and analysis makes the company number one choice for this task.  Utilising its ‘VECTOR’ portfolio of testing services, the Company is able to apply comprehensive systems engineering practices to establish evidence that systems operate correctly and interoperate effectively with other military platforms, not only adding overall value to any given project but ensuring that our armed services are operating with the best quality equipment.

SyntheSys delivers Link 16 TDL Interoperability testing to the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration

SyntheSys is pleased to announce their support to the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) in the successful completion of a Link 16 TDL Interoperability (IO) test between the Swedish ASC890 and the UK E-3D Sentry platforms.  This was the first time the UK and Sweden have tested Link 16 capable platforms over secure networks from National land based test facilities.  The test was ably supported by the E-3D Software Support Team (SST) in the UK, as well as by the FMV and Saab in Sweden.

The test was interfaced at the E-3D Mission Equipment Facility (MEF), Royal Air Force (RAF) Waddington through the UK Multi-Link Test Facility (MLTF) which is operated by SyntheSys.  SyntheSys provided a range of services for the test from its Validation Evaluation and Compliance Testing of Requirements (VECTOR) services.  These included:
  • Planning and support between the two platform authorities.
  • Development of the test plan and procedures.
  • Provision of test support at RAF Waddington.
  • Performing the duties of Director for the Test. 
The test cases for the IO test that were executed covered Own Unit Reporting, Air Surveillance, and Command and Control.

The primary objective of the IO test was to ensure the ASC890 demonstrated evidence to support its initial active participation in a forthcoming International IO Test in October 2014.  Generally, new participants have to join this international test passively (monitoring information only), then semi-active participation (transmission of PPLI only) before full active participation can be granted by the international community.  However, from the evidence of this test, it is expected that that the ASC890 will be granted permission to join immediately in the international test as an active participant.  Therefore, the ASC890 can immediately realise the benefits of testing IO with other nations, saving our customer, the FMV, both time and money in achieving its IO goals
