The Spring 2022 Edition of TDL Technology Magazine has Arrived

SyntheSys Defence is delighted to announce the release of the latest TDL Technology magazine. 

Issue 13 is designed to explore key industry themes and what better than a tribute to the E-3D Sentry on Page 8.  We continue our ‘demystifier’ training series on Page 6 whereby we examine the difference between interoperability and integration.  You can also read industry news on Pages 10 and 11.

The magazine also explores the SyntheSys Defence Tactical Data Link (TDL) product, Synapse. Synapse combines powerful applications with best-in-class expertise to provide a tailored service to test Tactical Data Link interoperability and integration and also enables platform participation in a rich training environment.  Synapse improves platform and operator performance by ensuring standards conformance is built into your command and mission system test and training programmes.

SyntheSys Defence to attend NTDLS 2022

SyntheSys is delighted to announce its attendance at the NATO Tactical Data Link Symposium (NTDLS) 2022.  

This annual event will be held at its regular venue in Calpe, Spain from  4^th - 7^th April, this year being its 24^th edition.  NTDLS is open to Interoperability Platform Nations at which experts in Tactical Data Links (TDLs) from the military, industry and academia can share operational, technical, and scientific experience on TDL technologies and processes in an open environment. 
 
Mark Hudspeth will be in attendance, Mark commented “After last year’s cancellation, I am excited to return to Calpe and connect with other TDL professionals and discuss this year’s theme of ‘Adapting Tactical Data Links to new Challenges’.  NTDLS will provide us with insights on potential future deficits in information and what would need to be addressed, and avoided, to establish and maintain information superiority.”

Training Success, Frederikshavn – Data Link Manager / Interface Control Officer Course

 

Having enjoyed a much needed Christmas holiday break, we were right back on the road in early January and are happy to announce the successful completion of our Data Link Manager / Interface Control Officer (DLM/ICO) course, held at Frederikshavn Naval Base in Denmark from 10-28 January.

 As the DLM/ICO is responsible for the entire Tactical Data Link (TDL) interface to include both planning and execution functions, it is critical the training scope is vast and comprehensive.  Over the course of three weeks North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) members from Denmark, the Netherlands, and Norway were provided with an in depth understanding of how to plan, build, interact and subsequently manage Multi TDL architectures. 

The course focused on providing students with a series of challenging learning outcomes using practical exercises, simulation, and real-world operational software.  This interactive process promotes a cooperative learning environment, allowing each student to progress with confidence and a developed knowledge of each TDL. Through the development of this type of knowledge TDL planners and operators are better equipped to identify and execute commander’s information exchange requirements, both in training and operational environments.

 Our next stop is Nieuw Milligen, Netherlands, where we are again delivering our DLM/ICO course to a group of personnel representing various organisations within the Dutch Armed Forces.

This is a remote working role however the work may involve on-site work for our clients within the UK and occasionally abroad.

This Systems Engineer role is customer facing, which provides enriching opportunities to work with our customer base during the pre-sales, deployment, configuration, training, and support phases of customer contracts. Experience of Model Based Systems Engineering, as supported by the Rhapsody® application would be an advantage.  You will also need an understanding and experience of: the IBM® Engineering Lifecycle Management tools (DOORS®, Engineering Workflow Management, Rhapsody® and Engineering Test Management)

SyntheSys is delighted to announce it has maintained Cyber Essentials Plus accreditation

Maintaining Cyber Essentials Plus is vital for SyntheSys as, not only does it manage our information security risk, it also helps us meet our ongoing contractual and supply chain needs.  

We are delighted to announce we have passed our latest assessment 5 years after our first certification.  During this time it has allowed SyntheSys to demonstrate a level of assurance to our customers by showing that security controls are in place to protect the business.  Having ‘Plus’ certification adds extra value to the company as it gives us access to an external auditor who can give SyntheSys the peace of mind that our cyber security is up to scratch.

2022 Tactical Data Link Training Dates Confirmed

 

SyntheSys Defence is pleased to announce the confirmed training dates for 2022 Tactical Data Link (TDL) Training.

SyntheSys Defence is proud to offer a range of TDL training, including Joint Range Extension Application Protocol (JREAP), Multifunctional Information Distribution System (MIDS) Link 16, Link 11, Link 22, Network Design and Data Link Manager/Interface Control Officer (DLM/ICO) courses. These courses are designed to enhance the understanding of various TDL systems, operations, and responsibilities while providing a solution to the formal training gap that exists across both the Joint and Allied enterprise. Our data link training courses are all created in accordance with ATDLP-5.55 North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) training standards.

Highlights of some of the courses include:

The DLM/ICO course is our flagship, 15-day course which is designed to provide working knowledge to personnel whose role is to plan, build, manage, interact, develop and engage in Multi TDL Architectures and operations.  The course provides students with a fundamental understanding of various TDLs, then, using state of the art simulation tools, practically applies this knowledge to real world scenarios.

The JREAP course covers both the Joint Range Extension (JRE) Processor Hardware and the Application Protocol (AP) as defined in MIL-STD-3011.  The course explains the benefits of the JREAP and provides the technical detail of how the system works.

The Introduction to Link 22 course, gives students a sound theoretical knowledge of all aspects of Link 22 operations.  The areas covered by the course include system architecture, network structures and an in-depth look at the message catalogue and the capabilities provided by those messages.  Detailed message transactions can be demonstrated using the TACTX simulator.

The MIDS Link 16 Network Design and Management course provides students with a comprehensive understanding of MIDS Link 16 Network Design and Management.  Emphasis is placed on practical training, with students utilising both simulation and operational software applications. Students who wish to learn the more complex and advanced areas of MIDS Network Design (ND) are encouraged to undertake our 8-day Advanced Network Design training course.

With all these courses comes free advanced access to our SyntheSys Defence Community Portal.  In there, students have access to all course material along with our full inventory of TDL-related training recordings, downloads, resources, and tools.

Continued Success for Senior Administrator, Shelley Fisher – Lead Auditor and STEM Ambassador

Since joining the SyntheSys team in August, Senior Administrator, Shelley Fisher, has been taking big strides through her commitment to personal development.  It is with that in mind that we celebrate Shelley’s recent success having qualified as an ISO9001 Lead Auditor which led to certification as a Chartered Auditor.

The ISO9001 is a quality management system standard which helps organisations ensure that they meet the needs of customers and other stakeholders, whilst meeting statutory and regulatory requirements related to products or programmes.  Its general objective is to improve quality and we are continually committed to meeting the requirements of the certification.  Developing and nurturing skills and knowledge in this area enhances our commercial and social value.

Shelley is now a qualified Lead Auditor and can assess the capability and effectiveness of our own and our customers’ Quality Management System (QMS).

But it doesn’t end there.  Shelley’s background and efforts have led to her becoming a STEM Ambassador.  STEM Ambassadors are volunteers from a wide range of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) -related jobs across the UK and Shelley will be committing time to working in North East-based schools to promote STEM subjects.

Shelley commented

‘’Having worked in manufacturing and engineering environments for many years, certification and continued skills development has always been important to me, both professionally and personally.  The Lead Auditor qualification is a real ‘stake in the ground’ for both myself and SyntheSys.  Not only does it strengthen our own internal QMS processes, but it also means that we can consult for customer systems and procedures.

Becoming part of the STEM ambassador programme has been the icing on the cake and I am passionate about working with young people to promote these enriching subject areas.

I am also looking ahead to other qualifications in health, safety, and the environment.  That’s all whilst working towards The National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health (NEBOSH) degree.’’
