The SyntheSys Defence Community Portal is here!



 


We are pleased to announce that the SyntheSys Defence Community Portal is now available.  We are inviting members of the Tactical Data Link and wider Defence community to register to access the new facility.  Customers and colleagues have free, secure, easy access to the portal which includes:

  • Downloadable Technical Articles, White Papers and other useful resources;
  • An open Community Forum where you can share your opinions and ask questions;
  • Capabilities and Limitations (CAPS & LIMS) database;
  • Unlimited subscription to TDL Technology Magazine.

Royal Danish Navy to Host SyntheSys Data Link Manager (DLM) /Interface Control Officer (ICO) Training Course in November 2017

We are delighted to announce that the Royal Danish Navy is to host our Data Link Manager (DLM)/Interface Control Officer (ICO) Course.

The course will be held from Monday 6 to Friday 24 November 2017 at Naval Warfare Centre, Naval Base in Frederikshavn.  The three-week course is focused on providing students with an in-depth understanding of Multi-TDL architectures using practical exercises, theoretical lessons, simulation and real world operational software.

SyntheSys to attend NTDLS 2017

We look forward to visiting Calpe, Spain to attend the 20th NTDLS event 27-30 March.  As we celebrate 20 years of the event, we also look at future challenges within the Tactical Data Link industry.  Tony Castle and Greg Meech will be attending to hear more about the future for TDL Interoperability and any lessons learned from the recent past.  We hope to see you there.

SyntheSys to support the IBM Watson IoT Systems & Software Development Symposium



We look forward to supporting the IBM Watson IoT Systems & Software Development Symposium on Thursday 16th March 2017 at the Royal Academy for Engineering Headquarters in London. 

This unique seminar aims to share experiences and best practices from IBM customers such as Nationwide and Visteon, the event will also explore other hot topics in the Software and Systems Development world.  Our own Matt Mendell will be presenting his strategies for migration between DOORS and DOORS NG and our newly appointed Su Ross will be at the event to discuss your software requirements.

SyntheSys sponsors bright young star to complete his BSC Hons Computing and IT Degree


We are pleased to announce that Whitby born Luke McCarthy has joined the SyntheSys team under a sponsorship scheme that will enable him to earn his degree whilst working for the company. 


Luke completed A levels at Scarborough Sixth Form College, leaving with a Business and Technology Education Council (BTEC) in IT, a BTEC in Business and a full A level in Applied Science.  He has been working with SyntheSys since July 2016 where his work has been focused on the development of a web based portal for SyntheSys’ clients. 


As a result of the impressive work Luke has invested over the past six months, we are pleased to have formulated a scheme whereby Luke is able to work for us whilst studying towards his Computing and IT degree with the Open University. 


Luke’s primary goal here at SyntheSys is to deepen his understanding and knowledge of software and systems development and we are excited to have him on board.  He said ‘I am looking forward to the challenge of working alongside SyntheSys’ experts who are leaders in their fields.  I am quite overwhelmed by the depth of experience of everyone from so many walks of life in systems engineering and training.  Specialising in software development with my degree will fit in with my SyntheSys work.’

SyntheSys Managing Consultant Jeremy Dick has received an award 23 years after completing the work!

Jeremy, 61, of Newbury in Berkshire, worked in 1993 with a colleague on a paper about automating the generation and sequencing of test cases from model-based specifications.  At the time he was working for computer manufacturer Bull Information Systems in Paris, where he had a post in the corporate research centre.

Jeremy said: “Bull had a history of generating test cases for the testing of computer hardware from the specification of the hardware.  They wanted to do the same with software and that’s what we were researching.

“The paper was published by Springer and made available to the general public.  I published the paper with a colleague, Alain Faivre, in a series of conferences called Formal Methods Europe (FME), today called simply Formal Methods.

“Twenty three years later that same conference decided to give us an award as the paper had had around 400 citations during the twenty three years!

“It has formed the basis for a lot of other people’s work in the same area.”
As the conference was internationally based, the paper has been cited by groups from all over the world.

The essence of the paper is this: it had been well-known that test cases could be generated from the structure of computer code, giving notions of code coverage; the paper detailed a way in which test cases can be generated from the structure of formal specifications, giving rise to new notions of functional coverage.

The original paper was presented at FME93, which was held in Odense, Denmark.
Jeremy recently went to the Formal Methods conference in Cyprus to receive his award, the Lucas Award, from Professor Marie-Claude Gaudel, Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur, of the Université de Paris-Sud.

Jeremy added: “The award came literally as a bolt from the blue especially as after publishing the paper I left the group and started work in a different field, so that I never did this type of work again.

“I subsequently went into systems engineering and requirements management which is what I now do for SyntheSys, which specialises in military tactical communications systems.

“When you do this sort of work for a paper you have no idea of its significance at the time as this takes quite a long time to emerge – but perhaps not usually this long!

“Nevertheless, after 23 years I was delighted to receive this award.  I went to the conference and reconnected with colleagues from the past.

“One of my ex-colleagues like me had children who have grown up and left home during this time.  That brought it home what a long spell this was.”
