TDL Technology Magazine Issue 14 Out Now

 


In this latest Issue, we reflect on the past, embrace the present, and anticipate the future, as we pay tribute to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in our feature which looks at the TDL technology, innovations, and usage over the last 70 years.

As this vital technology warps to support ever-more demanding operational, tactical, and strategic goals, we are seeing shifts towards simulation, sustainability, and security.  And so, as the industry upgrades, integrates and reinvents, the interoperability issues become greater.  This latest issue puts this interoperability testing challenge under the spotlight.

Training Success, Portuguese Air Force DLMC – Data Link Manager / Interface Control Officer Course

 


The Tactical Data Link (TDL) travel and course delivery continues, and we are happy to announce the successful completion of our Data Link Manager / Interface Control Officer (DLM/ICO) course, held at the Portuguese Air Force Base, Data Link Management Cell in Lisbon, Portugal from 3-21 October.  

As the DLM/ICO is responsible for the entire TDL interface to include both planning and execution functions, it is critical the training scope is vast and comprehensive.  Over the course of three weeks military members across various services representing Portugal, Belgium, Denmark, Norway, Czech Republic, Sweden, and Finland were provided with an in depth understanding of how to plan, build, interact and subsequently manage Multi TDL architectures. Having such a diverse group of students made for a rewarding learning experience which enabled attendees to learn and work together while also forming relationships that will no doubt prove valuable in the operational world.

The course focused on providing students with a series of challenging learning outcomes using practical exercises, simulation, and real-world operational software.  This interactive process promotes a cooperative learning environment, allowing each student to progress with confidence and develop a thorough understanding of each TDL.  Through the development of this knowledge TDL planners and operators are better equipped to identify and execute commander’s information exchange requirements, both in training and operational environments.




This DLM/ICO course will be our final one in what has been a very busy but successful 2022 training calendar.  We look forward to taking a small break and then hitting the ground running in 2023 with our next scheduled DLM/ICO course taking place in early February.  The location is still to be determined, if you are interested in hosting or attending, please do not hesitate to contact us at the links below.

More Free Training - Join us on Tuesday 29th November for our Free Online Joint Range Extension Application Protocol Training.

 


The Tactical Data Links (TDL) community has spoken!  After the great success of the last course, we asked you which application of TDL training you wanted next, and the outright winner was Joint Range Extension Application Protocol (JREAP).

JREAP is the protocol and message structure for the transmission and reception of pre-formatted messages over communications media other than those for which the message was designed.  Many of the messages provided for Link 16 are capable of being exchanged using JREAP, although it is not appropriate for all Link 16 messages to be exchanged in this way.

Welcoming Matt Mendell to the Team!

SyntheSys Defence Recently Attended the PATRICK BLACKETT Industry Day

 


SyntheSys Defence recently attended the PATRICK BLACKETT Industry Day at HMS Nelson, Portsmouth, as part of a NavyX sponsored event.  Part of the Royal Navy’s Develop Directorate the NavyX team, who seek to work collaboratively, differently, and at pace, took the opportunity to commence engagement between the Royal Navy (RN) and industry partners on capabilities that will accelerate lethality and autonomy for the RN, with a focus on using NavyX maritime platforms.
 
The presenting team set out the NavyX vision alongside a high-level overview of the aspirations going forward and to gauge how future projects might exploit the experimentation platforms, MADFOX, APAC24 and XV PATRICK BLACKETT.  Attendees were fortunate to undertake the opportunity to go aboard the XV PATRICK BLACKETT and gain a deeper insight into the latest trials acquisition.  The ship was named in recognition of the renowned Nobel Prize winning experimental physicist and Director of Naval Operational Research, Patrick Maynard Stuart Blackett, who saw active service in the First World War.  An exciting and blustery Industry Day was enjoyed by all attendees!

IDLS 2022 – Superiority via Information and Communication, Exploring Net Zero and Plenty of Networking!

 


Members of the Data Link and related defence communities are no doubt eagerly anticipating this year’s International Data Link Symposium, which once again runs as a physical event after the remote symposiums.  This next physical event takes place between 8-10 November in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.

We are pleased to announce that SyntheSys Defence will be represented by Mark Hudspeth (Managing Director), Roland Kemp (Consultant) and Kate Chandler (Senior Consultant).

IDLS 2022 presents a great opportunity to see new technologies, different solutions and meet with other industry professionals to discuss pertinent topics.  This year’s event theme ‘Achieving Superiority through Information and Communication Services’ is relevant now more than ever and we are positive this will make for a thought-provoking and insightful event. 

Kate will be exploring Net Zero in a Tactical Data Link (TDL) context during her brief which looks at next-generation multi-domain technologies and economic benefits.  Kate will be joined by SyntheSys Defence Managing Director, Mark Hudspeth and Consultant, Roland Kemp.

Students from Caedmon College Whitby Complete their STEAM Projects for this year’s ‘S Challenge’

 


The ‘S Challenge’ was created to influence students to research a subject of their choice and create a project considering aspects of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths).  When the students of Key Stage 3 finished their projects, they were asked to present in front of two judges, Kirsty Brown representing Caedmon College Whitby and a representative from SyntheSys.

This year’s competition brought many creative and insightful projects.  We would firstly like to congratulate all partakers of KS3 for making a step in their life to pursue their passion, as well as having the courage to present their findings in front of judges.  This is not an easy task, and we can congratulate them for showing such passion and initiative at such a young age.

Secondly, we would like to congratulate the joint winners of this year’s prize; Emily with her ‘Fast Fashion’ Project and Tristan’s Coding project.  Emily’s ‘Fast Fashion’ established many issues we face with the world today and how the fashion industry, specifically fast fashion, is contributing to the global climate.  We were blown away by her artistic representation of this matter which is why we gave her 1st place.  Tristan’s coding project was inspired from an information and Communication Technology (ICT) lesson but the way he took his knowledge to the next level stunned the judges.  Tristan created a report that looked at the evolution of coding and his predictions on the future of technology.  On top of this report, Tristan created his own computer game that demonstrated his hard work and understanding of coding.  As both subjects showed great initiative and included multiple aspects of STEAM, we felt it was only fair to award 1st place to both

Kirsty Brown, head of business studies at Caedmon College Whitby, spoke on this year’s challenge

“This is a fantastic opportunity for students to explore interests outside of the curriculum.  It allows them to develop their research, teambuilding, and presentation skills.  It was excellent to see such a diverse group of projects, and adding arts to the competition opened up new ways for students to present.  I am overjoyed with the entries we had this year, especially the winners Emily and Tristian, they produced work that we hadn’t seen in previous years and you could see the passion they had around their chosen topic.  A huge well done to everyone who took part and I am looking forward to continuing this project next year.”

Other special mentions include Dom, Toby and Angus with the Best Presentation award, Isaac with the Most Complex Topic award and Harry and Esme with the Examined Most Research award.  Very well done to you all.

John Hartas, Managing Director of SyntheSys, had this to say about this year STEAM challenge;

“This year’s projects, yet again, never failed to amaze the judges with the brilliant young minds of Caedmon College, Whitby.  It is always a pleasure to be able to work with the pupils to expand their knowledge on subjects they are passionate about.  All participants should be proud of their final products and I would like to congratulate them on being creative and having the courage to think outside the box.  I hope to see them all again next year.”

Once again, we are pleased to share that our cloud services continue to feature as part of the Crown Commercial Service, G-Cloud Framework.

The latest framework iteration, G-Cloud 13, provides a mechanism for clients to access leading IBM® software and systems engineering solutions through our cloudbaSE product, with associated technical support and training from our team. Our services can be found under the ‘Cloud Hosting’ lot.

The initiative aims to improve public sector procurement by pre-qualifying suppliers who meet a set minimum standard.
